I'm also concerned about snakes, and the odd tarantula, although a guy who has lived here for 9 years says he's only ever saw 3. Also - we have feral cats in the area. Are your predators daytime or night? - we have foxes, mink, otter, etc but...

... are you going to keep them warm on the way home from the market? What things are their that eat chickens where you live? Rats, cats, snakes... I'm not sure about spiders.... hunting birds(?)...and I think tarantulas like eggs. Have you thought about getting a 'broody' hen that has sat on a clutch of eggs (maybe of a different type- some breeds are better mothers so have their eggs swapped!) and hatched them, so ...
