... the first 30 airframes are stuck with the bad glue. There's a reason we now know this bit of F-22A arcana. On November 1, a small patch of LO material sheared off the inlet for the right engine on takeoff. The material was sucked into the engine, causing more than $1.2 million in damage. I reported about the mishap on this blog on Monday, a few days before the Air Combat Command released the accident investigation report. The report ...

... off my iPod for 10 minutes during take-off and landing. Mobile phones are in a special category for some reason. Unlike other passenger gear, their use is not allowed at any time during flight, not just during takeoff and landing. Mind you, I'm happy to see their use remain banned, on whatever pretext. Aircraft are one of the few remaining places where one can escape from the damned things. A passenger sitting next to me while ...

... travels extremely far distances, because that is what low frequency sound does. The low frequncy rumble of aircraft taking off at the Portland airport used to rattle my windows, when I lived some 8 miles from the takeoff path of the runway. The high frequency component was lost completely, but that low frequency stuff was terrible. You made that up out of whole cloth. I'm not quite sure what part you think he ...

While searching for the source of some personal misinformation that JB enlighted me about, I found two video clips of rejected takeoff tests. One's the 777's, the second the A340. The first one appears to be from a US Public Broadcasting System show "NOVA". The A340 excerpt appears to be from a surveillence camera of some kind. In either case, the energy shed by the brakes is staggering. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4LFErD-...

... understandable. Do newer ["all-glass"] birds have any pre-programmed descent plan built into the FMS? [I think there's one for aborted takeoffs.] No. And no there isn't for aborted takeoffs either. There is automatic braking (RTO), and that's just an offshoot of the normal auto braking system for landing. In fact, I could see a ...
