...Derived languages, as you call them, share common roots. The basic idea is that many modern languages came from or were derived form a earlier language. Sanskrit Greek Latin Spanish/...you know Latin and Spanish. Perhaps a better analogy would be understanding ancient Italian if you know Latin and Modern Italian. Or, if you know Old English and Modern English would Chaucer automatically compute? Is it a perfect series? C3
