...i am using xp pro, sp 2 i might note that when i click on activities, i can see that outlook is searching. the little magnifying glass in upper right goes around for a while. when journal finds nothing, the magnifying glass only appears for half a second (or not at all). not sure what this may mean. i have tried turning off the computer...

But you are probably right that their world perspective was set, like ours... So that his calculations were true relies upon hindsight since the way we can prove that telescope magnify things was not available evidence then. This made their religious theory all the more competitive in reality...
