DARPA in search of alternative coal-to-JP-8 technologies By John Croft Research proposals for liquid conversion technologies that can produce JP-8 hydrocarbon fuel directly from coal have been requested by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency. The request is part of an effort to supply alternate sources of the US military's average fuel requirement of more than 300,000 barrels of petroleum-based liquid fuels per day. ...

Months ago someone posted that hydrocarbon based fuels were merely a "convenience." Scores of millions will die without this "convenience" at an affordable price so this isn't true. On the other hand, the post was infinitely valuable by bracketing one side of the viewpoint extremes. At least we know the limits. Bret Cahill

...need to be fixed. They need to be fixed all the time. If they aren't maintained then they spew more crap into the air than WMD. My 14-year old Golf was running single-digit PPMs of CO and hydrocarbons and NOx when the tranny blew up. After zero maintanance on the emission controls. As the price of gas goes up, people will be discouraged from driving hideous beasts like Expeditions and Escalades and Ram trucks; fine...

... accomplished. Human intervention may be able to take nature on beyond anything that has or will happen without human intervention. Nature never built an incandescent light bulb, digital computer, etc. Nature never processed raw hydrocarbons through an engine to do work...that sort of thing. Additionally, fusion of any sort will release *hosts* of neutrons, which will make materials around them radioactive. The expectation is that ...

... studies. But pollution from coal plants is currently a serious problem. Unscrubbed smokestacks most certainly are a problem. Pollution from modern cars really isn't. Indeed. The last 'MOT' test my Saab had showed something like 0.0000%% (or whatever they measure it in) hydrocarbons output, negligible CO in the single digits IIRC ppm and lambda=1. CO2 is not a pollutant. It is a vital constituent of life. Graham

...to a minimum. That cannot said about automobile ICEs in city traffic. Rob A modern gasoline-powered car creates very little pollutants... essentially zero particulates and low ppm levels of hydrocarbons and nitrous stuff, probably cleaner watt-for-watt than the average coal plant.
