I never considered myself a Shatner fan. I have always been a "Captain Kirk" fan, a "Spock fan", and (primarily) a Star Trek fan. When Shatner did his "Get a life" bit, I did not think of it as aimed at Star Trek fans. I assumed it was pointed at SHATNERHOLICS. The fans parodied were Shatner-stalkers, not typical Trek fans. I laughed, primarily because I wasn't laughing at myself. I was laughing at people who were not like me....

The fans soon divided into two camps: those who took their fandom very... seriously, and were insulted by the coverage, and those who shrugged and said, "sure, the rubber ears are absurd, so..." think "trekkies" are loonies and "trekkies" think "trekkers" are humorless snobs who could stand to let some looniness into their fandom.
