Things are looking up in this area--West U. Kirby, Greenway. "Sushi King" on Kirby is open until 11:00 p.m. even on Sunday. Competition is fierce, but the local neighborhood place, "Oishii", is still packing them in. I was telling the owner last night that his waitstaff is one of the reasons. (They always have some leftovers for my dog, who loves it.) He also reassured me that sushi

Some time ago, I wrote up a little mini-history of the sushi scene in Houston, including such observations as the only place inside the Loop was "Tokyo Gardens" for a long time back in the mid to late '80s. Also of course I included memories of one of the leading sushi chefs of the time, the late Okubo Kanji, whom I first met at Ginza Benkay and who then went on to his own place, "Haruno"
