The one thing you should know about Gianni Schicchi is that "O. mio babbino caro" isn't really typical for the opera but is rather the exception. Gianni Schicchi is an intricate, subtle, and mercurial score, more or less Puccini's answer to Verdi's Falstaff, and not a straightforward or leisurely numbers opera filled with a succession of what we think of as typical Puccini melodies. The local opera company here (Lake George Opera) will be offering La Traviata. Gianni Schicchi (coupled with something called Buoso's Ghost) and The Pirates of Penzance. I'm planning to have my dad come visit and join me for an afternoon or evening of opera. Here's my dilemma: My inclination is to go for La Traviata (famous, beloved, I know it well) but it would be an evening performance
