Unless you have a specific need for meeting the DoD standard, the IDE "secure erase drive" command actually is probably more secure, faster and better in every regard ... but it's not the Dod standard command. At a cost of $25, if HDDerase does the job as advertised, it is a relative bargain. I've downloaded it, and I'll try it. If I like it and use it regularly on IDE and SATA drives, I'll pay the $25 willingly. SCSI, in all its shades and gradations, remains uncovered by HDDerase, so I'll have to continue with DBAN. Nice that these folks have done free or low-cost implementations of software

I have tried to use partman-auto-crypto by selecting "Automatically set up encrypted LVM" in the partman menu. I initially thought that it was going to use the free space which was available on the hard-drive. But, while it was wiping the partition, I had a doubt. So one "Alt+F2 + fdisk -l"
