Anyone notice the new bright florescent green signs at all schools. If
you come to the sign you'd better be doing 50Km., or you get a huge
fine and two demerits.

Since when did they chance the speed limits near schools ?
You can drive with caution, but I don't think you need to go 50... you
need to go the posted speed limit, which is 50, 60, 70 or 80.
There's too many schools on major routes to make the traffic slow to 50,
it's not practical. And you can't apply the speed limits to certain
schools and not others.

I just found a statistic that shows me just how many people think like you,
and it is terrifying to anybody who has children in school in Winnipeg. In
2004, Winnipeg police mobile radar clocked more...

Umm..I'm looking at the HTA and it doesn't mention anything about speed
restrictions in school zones. Those signs are only to alert you that
you are NEAR a school and you should expect to see kids near the road,
so be aware.. doesn't mean you need to go 50.
There are schools on many, many streets that are 60, and no way is
traffic expected to slow to 50, it's not reasonable or safe.
Yes, there ARE many other Winnipegers who think like me.
And quoting stats about damage to little bodies doesn't make this "50 in
a school zone" argument valid. Old people , young people, they all lose
shoes and fly just as far.
If the street is 60, you go 60, if it's 80, you go 80. Any faster in
that school zone and the fines are heavier.. that's it...
Fuck me if I'm gonna slow to 50 while driving past Glenlawn... never
gonna happen.

Including me. There is a school zone on Pembina Highway just south of
Chevrier that is a posted 60 zone. Photo radar sets up there often, and I
have never noticed the flash or been ticketed when travelling with the
traffic flow as it passes by the radar unit at around 65 Km per hour. It's a
60 zone plain and simple, not a 50 just because there's a school.

All I've heard is that they will be setting up more speed traps around
school zones. Please point me to something authoritative that says the speed
in ALL school zones is 50 kph.
