Now
approximately 24,000 students will donate $1.00 per term to the SRP!

WUSC is now being institutionalized as a FEDS service, just like GLOW or the
UW Sustainability Project. The permanent source of income from the levy –
something WUSC did not have before – and institutionalization into UW
provides WUSC with long-term stability.

What difference will the student levy make to the students the SRP sponsors?
Before, UW WUSC could sponsor one student for one year. We feel that one
year is too short to ask a student refugee to come to Canada, adapt,
initiate studies and become self-reliant. Now, with the income from the
student levy, we will be able to sponsor three students every two years for
a period of two years.

WUSC is now focusing on establishing longer-term commitments from its
partners, the university colleges and UW senior administration. These
partners have been making in-kind contributions of accommodation, meal
plans, and two-year tuition waivers on a student-by-student basis. Now that
the student refugee program is well established we anticipate arranging
agreements to provide ongoing contributions in these areas.

We are also excited to see our first two sponsored students living
successfully in Canada. Tariku Kebede is now a full-time engineering student
starting this fall. Both Tariku and Samuel Banti, the second student, spent
the summer working at Research In Motion (RIM). UW WUSC is very thankful to
have support from RIM, allowing these individuals their first work
opportunities in Canada.

Our third sponsored student, Yueu Majok, will be arriving from Kakuma
Refugee Camp, Kenya, on August 20. He will be greeted by a group of UW
student volunteers who will orient him to Canada and UW before he begins
frosh week along with other excited students in September. Yueu has been
accepted into the Faculty of Environment and will be upgrading his English
language in the fall term before pursing his education full time at UW.

Yueu wrote to us earlier this week: “I am feeling sad because I am leaving
my family members and friends behind. I am also happy about the fact that I
am going to school in a foreign country. It is the greatest adventure I have
ever had. It has given me the belief that the real developers of the world
are those who help bring up people with development disabilities. Those who
have participated in this program have the heart to feel others and to make
the whole world equal in any way they can do it. I am ready now to come to
Waterloo.”

WUSC is now looking forward to September to draw new students to the student
refugee program, organize its attendance at the 62nd WUSC Annual General
Assembly in Ottawa, and help Yueu transition into university life in
Waterloo. For more information contact Bojana Savic: Bojana_s24@hotmail.com
or Lisa ter Woort: terwoort@uwaterloo.ca

[10]Back to top

Sabbaticals: Coulomb explosions, older drivers

Here’s a list of some more UW faculty members who will be starting
sabbatical leaves as of September 1, with their plans for the sabbatical
months as reported to UW’s board of governors.

Raafat Mansour, electrical and computer engineering (6 months): “I plan to
spend my sabbatical as a Research Visiting Professor in the following
institutions: Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; University of New
South Wales, Sydney, Australia; University of Magdeburg, Germany; and
University of Bremen, Germany.”

Joseph Sanderson, physics and astronomy (12 months): “The sabbatical leave
will take place at the University of London (UK). The project will be to
study molecular alignment, using impulsive and adiabatic methods. A second
collaboration with a group including professors from Swansea and Belfast
will focus on Coulomb explosion of small molecules.”

Grace Yi, statistics and actuarial science (6 months): “I plan to visit
Professor Lang Wu at the University of British Columbia and Professor Nancy
Reid at the University of Toronto who have been collaborating with me on
different projects. I also plan to visit Professor Bruce Lindsay at Penn
State University with whom I newly started collaboration. I expect that my
research will greatly benefit from these arrangements.”

Grzegorz Glinka, mechanical and mechatronics engineering (6 months):
“Writing a book on the fatigue of welded structures, writing delayed
scientific papers from past research project, supervision of graduate
students and supervision of experiments.”

Adam Kolkiewicz, statistics and actuarial science (12 months): “During the
sabbatical leave I plan to focus on research. In particular, I would like to
finish several research projects that I was not able to complete due to
administrative positions that I had in the last three years.”

Anita Myers, health studies and gerontology (12 months): “I plan to continue
and expand my research on older drivers in collaboration with CanDrive
(Canadian Research Initiative for Vehicular Safety in the Elderly) through a
$5 million, five-year grant proposal to CIHR. Other collaborative projects
on older adult mobility include program/policy evaluation and research
studies on special populations (persons with vision, neuromuscular or
cognitive impairments, and ethno-cultural minorities).”

Daniel Davison, electrical and computer engineering (12 months): “This
sabbatical will be based at the University of Waterloo. My main goal is to
expand my research program in the dynamic control systems engineering area,
motivated by applications in the social psychology field. In addition, I
have been approached by a publisher to write an undergraduate textbook, and
the timeline matches up with the proposed sabbatical.”

[11]Back to top

UWRC plans events for autumn

Here's an update on activities from the [12]UW Recreation Committee (UWRC).
There's still time to enter the Contest of the Month. This award offers support similar to
scholarships and awards offered in the sciences, a rarity for theological
students.

Armstrong took several courses from Reimer and considered him a mentor as he
“wrestled with the philosophical and theological purpose of my technical
training.” Despite a busy academic schedule, Reimer “helped me find a way to
put the pieces of my faith back together,” says Armstrong. “Jim did not have
me retreat to a simple faith, but rather helped me to understand the
classical tradition on its own terms and somehow to manage that within my
own skeptical, almost agnostic, post-modern world and worldview.”

“The Reimer Award helps us identify and support future scholars and leaders
who will continue the lively engagement between faith and life that Jim
Reimer exemplifies in his teaching and writing,” said Jim Pankratz, academic
dean of Conrad Grebel University College and acting director for the Toronto
Mennonite Theological Centre.

Reimer retired after 22 years teaching at Grebel. In 1990 he was
instrumental in establishing the [11]Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre as
its founding director.

“We’re deeply grateful for the outstanding contribution Jim Reimer has made
to theological education and discourse, both in the academy and in the
church, in Canada and beyond,” said Henry Paetkau, president of Grebel.
Paetkau announced a newly established scholarship award for theology
students in Grebel’s master’s program at a recent dinner for Reimer’s
retirement. The Jim and Lorna Blair Charitable Foundation has initiated this
$5,000-a-year scholarship to honour Reimer’s career at Grebel.

Reimer received his MA in history from the University of Toronto (1974) and
his PhD in theology from the University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto
(1983). He specializes in nineteenth-century European intellectual history,
modern theology, German theology in the 1920s and 1930s, modern theology and
technology, theology and critical social theory, and Mennonite systematic
theology.

He has published widely in scholarly journals and is the author or editor of
several books, most notably The Dogmatic Imagination (2003) and Mennonites
and Classical Theology (2001). He is a member of the Center of Theological
Inquiry, Princeton, New Jersey. He is currently working on a theology of law
and civil institutions and is involved with interfaith dialogue between
Christians and Shiite Muslims in Iran.

Reimer has also been actively involved in church settings through preaching,
popular writing, and teaching. “Jim is a teacher, a scholar and a beloved
and active member of his local congregation who also serves the wider
Mennonite church,” says Armstrong. “His theology is grounded in the
classical stream, yet takes seriously the insights of modern and post-modern
thinkers. Jim's work has helped the church immensely in the areas of
pacifism, sexuality, and inter-religious dialogue. The time he spent with me
was literally life-changing.”

[12]Back to top

New learning projects funded, part 2

from the Centre for Teaching Excellence

Geoff McBoyle This year the call for Learning Initiative (LIF) and Program
Initiative (PIF) [13]Fund proposals included both single proposal
submissions and a new initiative introduced by Dr. Geoff McBoyle (left),
associate vice-president, academic. The new initiative invited faculty
members to submit theme-based proposals in three areas: Student Engagement
in Learning (SEL), Community Service Learning (CSL), and Teaching and
Technology. The themes were identified through an iterative process of
consultation with Dr. Ken Coates, dean of arts, faculty members from the
Teaching Based Research Group and the Teaching Excellence Council, and
graduate students. In all, eight projects were funded. Four were noted in
[14]a previous Daily Bulletin. Here are the details of the second four.

Daniel Maoz (Jewish Studies) and Paul Socken (French Studies) entitled “The
Chevruta Initiative: Traditional Jewish Learning that Links One Text with
Two Learners to Produce Three (or more) Opinions”. Chevruta is a team-based
approach to learning designed to enrich student learning through documented
reflective analysis. Students will engage in activities honed centuries ago
in Rabbinic learning centers to educate Jewish men in oral – and written –
religious tradition and thought. This ancient process is modified by removal
of gender and ethnic boundaries. As such, Jewish thought and understanding
reflected within the sacred cannon of Jewish literature is opened up to
appropriation by the students. (LIF)

Christine McWebb, (French Studies) entitled “Development of a Multimedia
Teaching Tool for Teaching Cultural Studies”. The focus of this study is to
develop a complete digital multimedia and multifaceted teaching product
which can be implemented specifically in a course on medieval literature and
culture but which is ultimately exportable into other areas of teaching
cultural studies. The new tool will essentially be an e-book that will allow
instructors to effectively provide the teacher and the learner with
expandable information, explanations, interpretations and contextualization
for learning materials. (LIF)

Jennifer Roberts-Smith, Drama professor Jennifer Roberts-Smith, right (Drama
and Speech Communication) entitled “Foundational Theatre Studies as
Praxis”. The project addresses three areas of research: enriching student
learning through experiential, praxis-based pedagogy; improving student
engagement and learning outcomes through flexible, integrated use of
technologies; and developing sustainable, transferable resources for
praxis-based, inter-medial teaching. The focus is on the development of a
permanent online teaching and research resource – a performance archive to
be made available via a controlled access web site. The course site will
also provide a freely accessible “Theatre Research Skills Online” component
that will enable students to develop skills for academic theatre research
through progressive exercises. (LIF)

Gordon Stubley, Mechanical engineering Gordon Stubley (left), Kaan
Erkorkmaz, Jan Huissoon, William Owen (Mechanical and Mechatronics
Engineering) entitled “Development and Validation of a Controls Systems
Concept Inventory and Diagnostic Test”. Students find introductory control
systems courses to be both challenging and, unfortunately, often irrelevant.
Any meaningful program to improve the teaching and learning in introductory
control systems courses needs a clear test of student conceptual
understanding to determine the effectiveness of proposed methods and
activities. The purpose of this project is to develop an inventory of the
key concepts in control systems theory and a diagnostic test to measure
student understanding of these concepts. The new initiative invited faculty members to submit theme-based
proposals in three areas: Student Engagement in Learning (SEL), Community
Service Learning (CSL), and Teaching and Technology. The themes were
identified through an iterative process of consultation with Dr. Ken Coates,
dean of arts, faculty members from the Teaching Based Research Group and the
Teaching Excellence Council, and graduate students.

In all, eight projects were funded. Here are the first four. The second
group of four will be noted in a future Daily Bulletin.

The CSL theme proposal, submitted by Diana Denton (Speech Communication),
Lowell Ewert (Peace and Conflict Studies), Cheryl Rose (Social Innovation),
and Nancy Waite (Pharmacy) entitled “Learning to Serve, Serving to Learn:
The Beginning of a Cross-Campus Community Service Initiative”, addresses an
educational approach that integrates service in the community with
intentional learning activities that encourage students’ critical and
reflective thinking, and civic responsibility. (PIF)

The SEL theme proposal, submitted by Jean Andrey (Geography), Paul Guild
(Management Sciences), Sally Gunz (Accounting), Rohan Jayasundera (Physics
and Astronomy), and Vivian Schoner (CTE) entitled “Slide in the Academy
–Toward Evidence and Remedy” will explore the extent of student engagement
in learning. Issues to be explored are knowledge growth, learning skills and
practices, motivation and interest. Results will be used to inform
development of a survey diagnostic tool that assesses engagement in
learning. (LIF)

Yulia Gel, Statistics Yulia Gel (left), Abraham Bovas, Stefan Steiner, and
Sean Scott (Statistics and Actuarial Science) entitled “Development of
E-Learning Techniques for Teaching Forecasting and Regression” assesses the
effectiveness of various novel E-Learning techniques for teaching time
series and applied regression analysis in undergraduate courses in
statistics. Specifically, the E-Learning tool will be designed to illustrate
key methodological time series and regression analysis concepts as these
apply to real-life problems through students’ use of self-learning and
self-assessing modules of case studies. (LIF)

Shannon Dea and Tim Kenyon (Philosophy) entitled “Small-group work in a
Learning Commons: Effects on Learning Outcomes and Student Engagement Among
Philosophy Majors” will test and compare three models of small-group work in
a new departmental learning commons for philosophy instruction. The study
looks at learning outcomes, student engagement over time, retention of
philosophy majors, and the alumni identification with UW Philosophy. (LIF)

[11]Back to top

Glad to be a grad? He swam two preliminary races on
Wednesday: first the 200-metre backstroke, then the 200-metre individual
medley. In the backstroke he came 15th of 40 swimmers and set a new personal
best time (1:58.84). In the medley he came 8th of 46 and set a new Canadian
record of 1:59.19.

Since he finished in the top 16 in each event, Beavers moved on to the
semi-finals Thursday morning. There he finished 12th in the men’s 200-metre
backstroke. Although he did not make the finals, he did set a new Canadian
record time of 1:58.50 in the event. In the 200-metre individual medley he
finished eighth overall, with a time of 1:59.43 — qualifying him to swim in
the finals on Friday morning. Since he plans to retire from international
competition after the Olympics, Friday’s race will be his last. Here's the
snippet from the Chronicle article: "One illustrative episode, recounted in
Randy Allen Harris's The Linguistics Wars (1993, New York: Oxford University
Press) has Lakoff repeatedly interrupting [Noam] Chomsky to shout, 'Noam!
Noam! You're wrong!' At another point, Lakoff interjects: 'I have been
lecturing about these things, and if you are interested, you should come to
my class.' As Harris . . . notes wryly, 'the level of gall required for
anyone, let alone a junior lecturer, to tell the inventor of the field to
attend his classes if he wanted to stay current goes right off the chutzpah
meter.'" The research found that
certain single-celled organisms, when exposed to carbon nanotubes, become
less healthy and less able to eat up bacteria, which could lead to some
bacteria populations ballooning. The organisms do, however, ingest the
carbon nanotubes — which poses another potential problem, that of the
nanotubes moving up the food chain. August is moving along,
which means fall will be here before we know it. And fall means Homecoming.
A special invitation to Homecoming 2008 will soon be arriving in the
mailboxes of on-campus alumni. Once again the red sparkly shoes (pumps,
crocs, oxfords, flip-flops, and wellies) take centre stage, as the
Homecoming Committee reminds everyone that 'There's No Place Like
Homecoming.' The annual event features something for everyone as the campus
opens up for alumni, students, faculty, staff and the community for a day of
fun. Highlights of this year's event include the 23rd Annual AHS Fun Run,
the Homecoming Family Carnival and the Battle of Waterloo (football, UW vs
Laurier) on the new Warrior Field. Check out [10]homecoming.uwaterloo.ca for
up-to-date information.

[11]Back to top

UW heritage team marks milestone

Beatrice Tam, UW Historic Places Initiative

The Historic Places Initiative (HPI) Team at the University of Waterloo has
just achieved an important milestone. Since its inception in January 2007,
the team has drafted 500 nominations to the Canadian Register of Historic
Places.

The HPI Team, set up by the [12]Heritage Resources Centre at UW in
collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and funded by Parks Canada, aids
municipalities in drafting nominations for designated heritage properties.
Once approved, the properties are listed on the Canadian Register, an online
register of historic places from across Canada. The register does not put
any further restrictions on the property, and is primarily intended to serve
as a tool to promote and celebrate the historic places in Canada. The UW HPI
team has most recently been working with the municipalities of Caledon,
Guelph, Kitchener, Halton Hills, Markham and Mississauga.

West Montrose covered bridge A number of nominations that the HPI team has
written are now listed on the Canadian Register, seven of which are located
in the Region of Waterloo. Among these is the West Montrose Covered Bridge
(left) in the Township of Woolwich, the only remaining covered bridge in
Ontario and the second oldest bridge in the Region of Waterloo.

“The HPI’s current goals are to continue to increase the number of
properties in Ontario nominated for inclusion on the Canadian Register and
to continue to engage heritage stakeholders by holding workshops and
attending conferences and events,” says Paul Dubniak, the current HPI team
leader.

The Heritage Resources Centre and the School of Planning are offering a
Heritage Planning Workshop for interested citizens, professionals and
students on October 25 and 26, and November 8 and 9, 2008 in Goderich,
Ontario. More information can be found [13]online.

In cooperation with Community Heritage Ontario and the Ministry of Culture,
the HPI team was able to hire a Summer Experience Program student for a
second year in a row. In the seven-week placement, the student fully
participates in the workings of the HPI team including drafting nominations.
“Just in my first few weeks, I have come to appreciate the importance of the
Historic Places Initiative,” says Beatrice Tam, this year’s SEP student and
a first-year planning student at UW. “I am happy to have this opportunity to
gain a fuller understanding of why heritage sites add diversity and value to
a community.”

[14]Back to top

Textbook grant web portal coming

from a Council of Ontario Universities notice

The [15]Council of Ontario Universities is sending out a reminder about the
new Textbook and Technology Grant for full-time university and college
students that was introduced by the 2008 Ontario Budget — a commitment of
$385 million over three years.

Later this summer, "the [16]Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
(MTCU) will re-introduce the grant through a promotional campaign that will
include media releases and the launch of the portal where students can apply
online for the grant.

"A stand-alone Textbook and Technology Grant online application will be
added to the OSAP portal for students applying for the grant (September
operational date still to be determined). Students who are applying for OSAP
will automatically be considered for the grant once their full-time
enrolment has been confirmed by their institutions.

"To be eligible, students have to be Canadian residents; international
students are not eligible. For Canadian residents, the eligibility threshold
to receive the grant is 60%% of a full course load for students who do not
have a permanent disability. For students who have a permanent disability,
the eligibility threshold is 40%% of a full course load."

More details will be released in late August.

[17]Back to top

UW professors out and about

"Texting thumb" study first of its kind

The first-ever research study on "texting thumb" and other kinds of
discomfort stemming from the overuse of hand-held devices is being carried
out, appropriately, by researchers at UW. Richard Wells Professor
[18]Richard Wells, kinesiology (right), in collaboration with Ben Amick,
scientific director of the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto, is
surveying thousands of Canadian workers to find out whether using hand-held
devices such as BlackBerrys, iPods, personal digital assistants, or cell
phones that combine multiple functions, results in thumb, arm, shoulder and
neck pain.

Most of these devices include a mini-keyboard, stylus or thumb wheel/pad as
the primary input interface. Heavy use of such hand-held devices has been
linked in the media to pain and disability in the hand, mainly the thumb,
and variously named "texting tenosynovitis," "texting thumb," or "text
messenger's thumb."

Researchers will perform an internet-based questionnaire study in large
organizations to determine the prevalence of hand and thumb troubles in
people who use hand-held devices. As well, the study will assess any
relationships between people's use of hand-held devices and any hand, arm
and shoulder troubles they may have. The information will help shed light on
the emerging problem and gain insight into the prevalence of hand and arm
troubles in the workforce. Also, it will lay the foundation for possible
preventive activities such as recommendations on use or the design of
devices.

The original, uncut article was prepared by UW's Media Relations Office and
appeared in the Waterloo Region Record on July 26.

Heritage districts not to be feared

Robert Shipley, planning An editorial that appeared in the Waterloo Region
Record on July 24 mentioned the work of Robert Shipley (left), a UW planning
professor. To help answer homeowners' questions about the impact on their
property value when their homes are placed within a heritage district,
"Parks Canada is studying heritage districts and compiling information
provided by the residents who live within them. In Kitchener, Robert Shipley
. . . is leading a team that is studying the Upper Doon Heritage
Conservation District. The team is looking into the Upper Doon district
because it is the oldest of the four heritage districts in Kitchener. . . .
Shipley said [19]the team's research shows there is little validity to the
concerns that are often raised when a city considers imposing a heritage
designation on a neighbourhood. A majority of the people in the Upper Doon
district who were interviewed expressed satisfaction with the heritage
designation. . . . The survey didn't find that the homeowners who had sold
their properties had lost financially."

CPA staff

[20]Back to top

Link of the day

[21]International Youth Day

When and where

Library hours extended for exam season, through August 16: Dana Porter
Library, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily; Davis Centre library, 24 hours a day except
Sundays 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Spring term exams August 5-16 (schedule [22]online).

Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre auditions for “Twelve Angry Men” (male
actors, technical and production staff) August 11-13, 6 to 9 p.m.,
Humanities room 334 (production opens October 23, information e-mail
ep@kwlt.org).

Retail services outlets (bookstore, UW Shop, TechWorx, Campus TechShop)
closed all day today for staff general meeting.

Laughter Yoga: event for all UW employees through the [23]UW Recreation
Committee, Wednesday, 6 to 6:45 p.m., Waterloo Park at Albert Street.
