Hi,
The end of the university year is rapidly approaching and I need to
gather my daughter and her belongings from London.
My question is this - will a standard size tumble drier fit into a
Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus Estate cars?

Can you use a tape measure or ruler?

Indeed I can. I can measure the tumble drier I have, but I don't have
an Astra or Focus Estate. I am going to hire a car as I already know
that a tumble drier will not fit in my 406 saloon. Wanted some idea of
if it would fit before venturing forth and pricing a hire

I suppose you could always contact the hire company and give them the
measurements so they can measure the two estate cars and see whether the
drier will fit in either/both.
Appliance are usually 600 mm wide. My washer drier is 600x570x820 and I'd
have thought that this would fit on its back (to make the depth 570 occupy
the floor-to-roof dimension of the car), with the distance between the wheel
arches being the 600 mm diemnsion of the drier and the height of the drier
being the distance between tailgate and front seat-back dimension.
At least an estate shouldn't have a lip: the tailgate should come right down
to the floor.
Check the weight of the drier to maek sure the car won't sit too heavily on
its suspension. It is just a drier, not a washer/drier which will have
concrete weights to stop it dancing across the floor when it spins!

If you're hiring anyway I would look at a small van rather than a car.
Much more space and much easier to load than a car.
A SWB Transit or Maxus would probably fir the bill as would a Vivaro /
Despatch / Vito style of van
