It's better to feel the pain now than in 10-20 years' time when it
will be too late. The age of cheap oil is over. Sure, a few new oil
fields may be discovered here and there, but they are a drop in the
ocean. Nothing will change that fact that oil must be extracted at
ever increasing costs at ever slower rates, and nothing will change
the voracious appetite for oil in Asia. There will always be short
term spikes and dips, but on average, petrol and diesel will never be
as cheap as it used to be, and we better get used to it.
Those of you suggest lowering fuel taxes, or government subsidies,
what do you think it will achieve? A few more years of cheap petrol
where we can continue to stick our head in the sand, and then what?
Price has always been the best driving force of innovation and change.
The good news is that the technology we currently use is increadibly
wasteful. There is an enormous potential to save energy without giving
up our standard of living. This potential has barely been exploited
until now.

Why are you being so rude? I only posted a message on usenet. That's
all. It's not like I personally attacked you or anything. Just take it
or leave it. Give me your thoughts if you have any, or ignore my
message if you don't. But please don't be rude.

The likes of Iran are still sitting on vast reserves of oil. It just isn't
in their interest to dig it all up at the same time. The producers
controlling output keeps the price nice and high for them.

I'm not.

Which bit of "fuck off and don't tell me what to do" do you not
understand?
After all, I only posted a message on usenet. That's all. It's not like
I personally attacked you or anything. Just take it or leave it.

This newsgroup is dominated by motorists who seem to think they have a
natural right to drive their polluting gas-guzzlers to their heart's
content, regardless of their impact on the planet and its people. At
the same time they treat other forms of transport, apart from flying, ...
