"In 1948, the first Beetle consumed 7.5 litres of petrol for every 100
km.
In 2008, the new Beetle consumes...the same! 7.5 litres of petrol for
every 100 km."
"The Industry Committee has voted earlier on 1st of September an
opinion which would significantly
weaken this bill a great deal, a vote which which is in stark
contrast with public opinion.
A recent poll showed that 87%% of European citizens think measures to
require carmakers to reduce the
fuel consumption of new cars by 25%% should be urgently introduced, and
that europeans consider climate
change to be the second biggest serious problem (62%%) facing the
world, after poverty (68%%).
It is extremely worrying and disappointing that the Industry Committee
put the interests of the
car industry over the people and the environment.

Beetle 1.9TDi - official combined fuel economy = 52mpg = 5.4l/100km
Now contemplate the massive increases in secondary safety - impact
survivability - between the two, and how that might have contributed to
the rough doubling in weight between the two.

Question 1) Which is more polluting:
a) My old 1986 Ford Capri 2L which does 36MPG but has no catalytic
converter, has an idle CO2 setting of 1.5%%-4.5%%, runs on a carburretor
and points and regularly needs retuning or,
b) My old 1998 Ford Mondeo 2L which does 36MPG but has a catalytic
convertor, has an idle CO2 setting of <0.5%%, runs on a fuel injection
system which constantly monitors the emissions and adjusts them
accordingly and never needs tuning?
Question 2) Which is more dangerous to pedestrians:
