Since Tuesday I have driven about 900 miles this week on the
motorways. I drive as close to the speed limit (usually 70) as I can,
erring on the top side, my speedometer appears to be accurate and
certainly compares well with the 56 mph speed limiters on LGVs.

This exact situation happened to me when I was taking my IAM advanced
driving test. Luckily I spotted the motorbike a few seconds before he made
his move into the Gap of Death, and I was still mentally in "commentary
mode" although officially I'd already done that bit of the test.

So I said "There's a motorbike behind me. He's itching to get past and
there's traffic in Lane 3. I hope he's not going to try to overtake me on
the left. Ah yes, he's now in Lane 1. The gap is closing rapidly. Surely
he's not... I'm slowing to increase the gap in case he tries. Yes, there he
goes - what a pillock."

Well I have to confess that I take great pleasure in undertaking
Chelsea Tractors that sit in the outside lane of dual-carriageways
whilst the inside lane is perfectly clear.

They're usually travelling at about 80mph so seem to believe that this
excuses their blatant absence of lane discipline.

The common outcome though seems to be that by me carrying out the
(perfectly safe) manoevour, the drivers of these gas-guzzlers feel
compelled to test whether their headlight main beams are functional by
means of repeatedly flicking them on and off for about four seconds.
