"The father of a 17-year-old girl who was fatally injured in a
collision with a cyclist has said it is "laughable" the man has only
been fined.
Mick Bennett said Jason Howard should have faced manslaughter charges
and been jailed for several years over Rhiannon Bennett's death in
April 2007..."

You see, I am not alone in thinking that road killings are treated
much too lightly, however caused. Why is there so much complacence
about death on our roads and why are the penalties for such killings
so derisory?

True, you're not. As has been pointed out to you many times in the past.
However, you ARE alone in thinking that blame is easily identified solely
by looking at the mode of transport involved.

More gloating over other people's tragedies. Truly you are ill.

It wasn't a road killing. And you have not condemned the pavement
cyclist who killed the girl, nor have you spoken up against the
dangerous habit of cycling on the pavement.

It isn't clear from any of the news reports if its on the road or not, the
news reports differ, the bbc one quoted seems to say it was.
Odd that this isn't clear given the number of witnesses.

What I detect from Duhg is a desire to blame the dead girl for being in
the way of the cyclist. This is at odds with the actuality, hence the
problem in Duhg's eyes.

If it was indeed Special Brew, as claimed, then two 9.0%% 500ml cans would
be equivalent to 9 units of alcohol - or slightly less alcohol than a
full bottle of 13%% alcohol wine, or around a third of a 70cl bottle of
37.5%% spirits. Other sources have said "two-to-three" cans, and we can be
fairly sure that teenagers drinking in the street will be liable to under-
report the amount of booze consumed.
But whilst it may explain why she didn't jump out of the way, and
probably even why she was in the road in the first place (if she was) it
doesn't explain why the cyclist didn't attempt to avoid her (if he
didn't).
If he did attempt to avoid her, it may well explain why she might think
playing chicken with him was other than utterly stupid.
If he was tonking along the pavement at 20mph, then there's no excuse
whatsoever.
