One of the best days of my life (so far) was a festival in the grounds of
Ally Pally. The Raincoats, The Au Pairs, and then before The Slits did
their headline set there was JCC. A fight started in the audience and
somebody was bottled. JCC pretty much sorted it all out from on stage. By
hell that guy can control an audience when he puts his mind to it. Just a
truly great performer.

My other major JCC memory is indirect. We were doing a gig somewhere in a
West End basement at one of The McGee's clubs. The support act asked to
have a "ranter" do a short set after there's. He did a few JCC poems. I
took umbrage at that on the grounds that the whole point of being a
ranter was supposed to be that you wrote your own poems. So I scribbled a
piss take and performed it before our set. We had to do a runner at the
end of the gig to avoid me getting beaten up by the other band.

Piss take was as follows, with stage directions.

Spiky hair, tight black jeans,
Runs on Guinness, chips and beans,
Farts from both bloody ends it seems,
He's a ranter, hand up and down>
Know what I mean.

Only eats brown eggs and rice,
Homo (H)ackney, that's not nice,
If you know what's good for you take my advice,
He's a ranter,
Don't look twice.

Which I thought was harsh but fair.
