Pitiful cases of car dependency.

"CHINGFORD: Thousands sign parking petition

Thousands of angry shoppers and traders have objected to increased
parking charges made by the local authority.

Chingford traders believe that since the cost of parking was doubled
at the beginning of April from 50p for an hour, to 50p for 30 minutes,
shoppers have been spending less time perusing the shops in Station
Road to save on parking charges..."

People do so. However, the idea of doing large amounts of shopping
at a large remote shop is something which only appeared as part of
car culture. There are other ways of shopping, which have the
advantage of taking less time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
saving money and avoiding carrying large amounts of stuff around.

Hedge trimmings can either be composted in the garden or, if one has
too much compost on the go, put into the brown bin for the council
to compost (assuming the council offers this service, most do I
think).

Next contestant please.

Would that be possible without a widespread network of tarmac roads?

Nowhere near enough for a week's shopping for a family where both adults
work full-time, that's for certain.

Which depend upon local shops staying in business and, whether you and Doug
like it or not, there is plenty of evidence that they don't survive without
cheap parking for shoppers in the area.
