The new age of the train

I know the abusive motorists who dominate this transport newsgroup
won't be interested in this one but it is transport related.

"Britain is witnessing the dawn of a new era of rail travel as an
unprecedented demand for environmentally friendly transport encourages
people to take more train journeys than at any time since the Second
World War.

Figures released yesterday revealed that the number of miles travelled
on the rail network reached a record-breaking peacetime high of 30.1
billion during 2007, capping a huge rise in popularity in which
passenger numbers have increased every year for the past 13 years.

The rise in passenger miles, documented by the Association of Train
Operating Companies (Atoc), indicates a boom in demand for rail
transport at a time when the threat of climate change is encouraging
more people to find greener ways of moving around.

Congratulations on posting a non-car related story.

I don't know where you go the idea that as a motorist I am not
interested in rail, but it is entirely untrue. I would love to see a
renaissance in rail in this country.

So would I, but to be honest in my neck of the woods PT aint bad anyway.
The trouble is near me there are to many people for the trains in the
peaks, and it is very difficult to add more trains.
Same goes for the roads, but the good news is that today I will be
working in the Guildford, Haslemere area.(not using PT)

Seconded. But there's no way it's going to happen whilst ad-hoc fares are
so ludicrously expensive.

Tempt travellers to change to the train, not try to tax them out of their
cars. Carrot, not stick.

It seems that we already have it, but the system can't cope!

As ever, you try to twist facts to your perverted view.

By renaissance, I mean the delivery of a vastly improved service.
From my anecdotal experience, there has been an improvement over the
past 3-5 years, but that has been from an extremely low point. The
level of service has probably only now got back to where it was prior
to privatisation, which as we all remember wasn't exactly great.

Couldn't agree more. Can't see it happening, sadly, not whilst the
Treasury can sit back and take tens of billions per year on duty/VAT
from fuel for road users.
