Am I being paranoid , or do temporary traffic lights actually make the
traffic flow far less smooth that it would be if they didn't bother
putting them up? We have some near where I live on only moderately
busy road and the queues ended up being I'd guess 200 metres long on
either side. This morning the generator powering them had obviously
run out of diesel. The queues today? About 10 cars each side. Drivers
were quite easily going around the obstruction with little fuss and
bother.
So why the **** do they put these damn things up all the sodding
time??
Also in years past I've noticed the traffic flowing smoother when some
permanent traffic lights have failed so I wonder how much thought
actually goes in to siting these things , or is it a knee jerk
response of junction = traffic lights required no matter what?

Unless the restriction goes around a corner, or is in an area full of
meatheads, yes.

They had an installation outside my house for a month last year, despite the
fact that a few hundred yards up on the same road is a long narrow section
which always functions perfectly well with politeness.

A month? Thats bad luck. Though if its british workmen digging the
road up they'll bugger off for a week to do something else, never mind
the jams they're causing.

Pedestrians is a valid point I guess , though as for car safety ,
you'd have to be a complete idiot to speed through an unsignalled
junction without checking whats coming first. Even the boy racers in
my area don't do that (though they do pretty much everything else).

To delay you.
It's deliberate.
I'm not joking. It's all part of the "must avoid even the remotest
possibility of being held accountable for an accident even if it was
someone else's fault" syndrome.

Yeah , they're generally called women, they're usually on the school
run and they're usually driving vehicles far bigger than they can
manage on narrow roads and thats before you take into account the 3
foot clearance on either side that every woman driver seems to require
before they'll proceed. Obviously they learn to drive at the black cab
school of motoring whereby the rules of the road can magically be
suspended if you need to stop and let out little tabatha and tarquin.
