Britain is witnessing the dawn of a new era of rail travel as an
unprecedented demand for environmentally friendly transport encourages
people to take more train journeys than at any time since the Second
World War.

So, is it really a desire for more environmentally friendly transport
or, in fact, just another privatisation success story as the boom does
seem to have coincided with the railways falling into private hands.
Anyway, who cares because this is the DfT’s (and those New Labour
girl’s) worst nightmare?
The motivation behind rail privatisation was supposed to have finished
them off, not turned them into a success story – deep joy.

Coincided? Phased privatisation started in 1994 and was complete in 1997.

The phrases 'despite privatisation' and 'hypermobility fuelled by
economic growth' spring to mind. Correlation does not equal
causality.

And given that the railways are now operating at absolute maximum capacity,
it rather makes a mockery of your oft-repeated suggestion that "all of the
trucks should be taken off of the road and freight should go by rail"
