"Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay says British restaurants should be fined
if they serve fruit and vegetables which are not in season."
Didn't someone on this group tell me that doing so would cause us all
to die of scurvy?...
Lets hope there is a TV crew about when Doug runs screaming into the
restaurant to try and tell Gordon of how his plan would doom us all...
Its nice to see someone pointing out that making better use of local
produce would be good for the environment ( and Doug please stop
trying to move the goalposts by claiming I'm saying we only use local
things).

Forget it. This is just some guy trying to drum up a bit of publicity.
Probably fine for the rich elite who can afford his eateries every day
but for normal people it's neither well thought-out nor practical.

This is the man who flies all over the workd to his restaurants, including
to one in Dubai where nothing is ever home grown or local.

Why not? My local grocers and farm shop stock in season fruit and veg.
It's no dearer than Tesco and in many cases, cheaper.
There's no reason why not to.

I can recall when only the rich elite could afford to eat any fresh fruit or
vegetable that was not in season.

OK, it's not practical because everything is "in season" somewhere in
the world. So what he's actually saying is that we should not serve
imported food in restaurants.
If they were restricted to only using local produce, the variety
of dishes they, err, dish up, would be diminshed and fewer people would
eat out. It would kill the indian/chinese restaurant business. ...
