This week a hole-digging company has been working at the western end
of Wandsworth High Street (A3). They have closed a pedestrian crossing
just to the east of Broomhill Road, which means that pedestrians
cannot cross the High Street safely at a controlled crossing, unless
they walk 180 yards west, or 220 yards east (according to the
temporary signs). So, naturally, people are taking risks, if they are
young enough or old enough. The traffic is restricted to one lane
westbound, but on the other hand the traffic light is turned off, so
there isn't much let up. Is it correct that there does not need to be
any provision of a temporary controlled crossing, considering that
this is a busy road and the other crossings are 400 yards apart?

Excellent, find their deepest hole, jump in then give us a call and
someone will be along to fill you in.

Ahhhh, poor things. Have to walk a couple hundred yards, my heart bleeds.

They have a choice.

There are other crossings mere yards from this one, you say.

Your feet would bleed. It's 400 extra yards for the round trip. I
expect that you would have to get in your car, faced with that
distance.

The ability to walk an extra few hundred yards is not the issue. I'm
reaonably fit and I *could* walk an extra few hundred yards without any
problem whatsoever. But whether I could be *bothered* to walk the extra
distance, and factor in the extra time that it would take, is another
matter: I'd be inclined to take my chances and cross where I always had done
before.
