he's probably out enjoying it as well, but he'd never admit it.

Look at his viewing habits. He love cars in action so its not a
stretch to see him enjoying this race.

Perhaps - don't forget how selective people's turn ons tend to be! We
know he gets turned on by car chase TV programs, but air races, that's
probably a new one for him.
