Although motorists here pretend not to know what 4x4 means, just about
everyone else knows that it describes a particular form of huge,
gasguzzler.
"Crash test highlights 4x4 safety fears
Experts are calling for the Nissan Navara to be recalled after it
scored just one star out of five in the Euro NCap test."

Wrong.

They're talking about one specific make and model of vehicle, which has four
wheels, all of which are driven. That's it.

Erm doug the BBC are using the term to describe one specific vehicle.
You use it to describe a range of vehicles; some of which are not even
4x4s or gas guzzles.
But heck we've shown you can't define what it means before...
Nice to see you starting another of the car threads you erm... don't
start...

...which is, indeed, 4x4.
Oh - and Nissan _are_ recalling 'em.

Duhg, we all know what a 4x4 is. It is you who has trouble with it.
See for example
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.transport/msg/1e7ebfa7fd1338f2?dmode=source
in which you stated that "'4x4' is a derogatory term used for a
particular style of oversized
car, which almost certainly includes your own gas guzzler."
You had already been informed that said gas guzzler in question was a
(4x2) V6 Rover Sterling

"just about everyone else" (which I suspect means "Schmoug and his
cronies") is wrong, then. A 4x4 is a vehicle with 4 wheels, all of
which are driven. Nothing more, nothing less.
I think the vehicles to which you are referring are SUVs. Why not
just stick with that term, rather than showing your utter incompetence
yet again?

Motorists here have shown time and again that they know exactly what 4x4
means. You show no sign of understanding the term. You have been asked
to give an accurate definition and have failed to do so.

"Just about everyone" is wrong then, because 4x4 refers to a vehicle
with four road wheels, all of them driven by the engine. No more, no
less.
Hence a Fiat Panda 4x4 is a 4x4. And many of the vehicles you describe
as "4x4" are in fact "4x2".
You are consistently 2x4 as in "as thick as two short planks."
BTW Duhglearse, a Navarra is a pickup truck, a commercial vehicle
intended for use by tradesmen "in the common good". And it is not
(normally) a 4x4 it is usually operated as in 2WD.

But Doug...
I drive a 6x2 and sometimes drive 6x4's which are bigger numbers than
4x4 so surely they're worse?
But here's the rub. If I and hundreds of thousands like me didn't,
you'd starve and be living in the dark and cold.

There are probably, what, 17 of them in the country, or so?

And if it weren't for lots of people driving around in 4x4s then it
would take a lot longer for you and hundred's of thousands like you to
deliver.
