It looks like a motorist who killed a cyclist is going to "get away" with
nothing more than a spell in prison. Would all those who think she's being
treated leniently please say so.

Texting driver who killed cyclist faces jail
A speeding driver who was sending a text message to her husband as she drove
into a teenage cyclist collapsed in tears on Friday as she was convicted of
causing his death by dangerous driving.
Kiera Coultas, 25, a hotel manager, was replying to a message on her mobile
phone when she hit Jordan Wickington, 19.
The teenager, who was not wearing a helmet, died in hospital later the same
day.
Coultas admitted her BMW was doing 45mph in a 30mph limit when she drove
across a junction in Southampton shortly after 7am.
She told Southampton Crown Court she had received three fixed penalty
tickets for speeding - two of the offences were committed on a road leading
to the junction.
Jordan, of Netley Abbey, Hants, had momentarily stopped at the traffic
lights but then went through them when they were red.

Depends on what sentence she is given. The most recent sentencing
guidelines (of which I am aware) were handed down by the Court of
Appeal in R v Richardson:
http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Crim/2006/3186.html
They are:
i) No aggravating circumstances - twelve months to two years'
imprisonment;
ii) Intermediate culpability - two to four and a half years'
imprisonment;
iii) Higher culpability - four and a half to seven years'
imprisonment;
iv) Most serious culpability - seven to fourteen years' imprisonment.
A list of aggravating and mitigating circumstances are set out in para
16 of the judgment.

Heck, no, Some sort of custodial sentence is almost certainly
appropriate.

There's a whole class of accidents that happen because neither party is
paying attention that wouldn't have happened if either one had been.
This appears to have been one of them. If the cyclist had given a shit
about the red light, he'd still be alive, and be telling the story about
how he saw some mad woman doing 45mph through a 30mph junction...
...and texting at the same time!

That'll be the "dead victim" who cycled through a red light in front of
oncoming traffic, will it?
