After the second major fire in it's relatively short life, this could put a
crimp on the idea of moving more passengers from air to "high speed" rail.

Unlikely, because (AIUI) the fire originated on a lorry.

Did anyone else notice that the Curse of Gollum struck again? On the
very day that Duhg posted a link saying that passengers were switching
from air to rail services using the tunnel, the damn thing goes and
sets on fire.
Once again, Gollum's 100%% record of fuck ups is unblemished.

What has that got to do with it? The fire closed the tunnel for all trains.

Because it shows that it wasn't the mode of transport that caused the
problem.

Indeed, just as a lorry crash on a motorway or a freight aicraft crashing at
an airport closes those facilities until they're repaired. The only reason
the Tunnel closes for longer is because it's a more complex structure with
more complex equipment.

That is totally irrelevant though.

The report I read stated that the fire started in a lorry which had
overheated brakes but this seems almost impossible to me.
When you finally pull the handbrake on on one of those trains, you will have
been travelling at very low speed for 10-15 minutes around the terminal and
will have been completely stationary for several minutes while booking on,
doing immigration controls etc...
Lorry brakes do catch fire, for example if you come down a mountain too
fast. But not after the dead-flat run into Calais, 15 minutes in the
terminal and 20 minutes into the train journey.

As you say, it does seem unlikely, but then that's journalists.
