Great! Since motorists have literally driven children from our streets
the kids are now invited to share car parks instead.
"Health chiefs are under fire today after recommending that children
should play in office car parks - in the wake of the closure of
hundreds of school playing fields.
In addition to getting children to walk, cycle and swim more, the
Government's health advisory body wants to open up more space for them
to play in.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice)
handed out the advice as part of new draft guidelines for promoting
children's health by making sure they get more exercise.
But the car parks proposal will be seen as misfire, coming as it does
after the mass sell-off of more than 300 school playing fields last
year alone..."

It was when I was a kid living in London. We were supposed to get out of the
road if we saw a car turning in at one end or the other, but that was a rare
event. We were probably better at observing that instruction than the one to
stay off the bomb site at the bottom end of the road

What a bizzarre story. You can tell it's the silly season, can't you.

I can accept that it was safer due to there being fewer cars on the road
generally. But, even in the days of horse drawn traffic, there has always
been the likelihood of a person being run over, thus not as safe as playing
in the park or on spare ground. I was fortunate when growing up in that
there was a large grassed area directly in front of my house and a larger
one immedialtely across the road but I still went to the park and unused
land to play. ...

Wrong. That was the eco-loonies stopping new houses being built on
greenfield sites so the playing fields became high value land, were
sold off and built on.

We used to play in office car parks 25 years ago , what's the big deal?
Especially when it was raining because the fields were too muddy.
Anyway, Conor's spot on with his explanation why it's not the car that's
apparently to blame, so I won't waste bandwith repeating it

That came later. First there was car proliferation driving kids off
the streets then more recently the sell off of playing fields, which
have to be reached by road anyway.
There are plenty of historical photographs showing kids playing in
empty streets without a single parked car in sight and hardly any
through traffic. You would be very hard pressed to find a similar
situation today.
