Hazard lights - parking for free

Why is it that some drivers seem to be under the impression that
putting their hazrd lights on gives them carte blanche to park where
they like , when they like for as long as they like and bugger anyone
stuck in a jam caused by their selfishness? Mostly its van drivers but
plenty of car drivers do it too especially on the school run and I've
seen the odd truck pulling the same stunt also.

Bah humbug!

I think you've almost answered your own question. They've recognised that
they're causing a hazard and so switch on their hazard warning lights. It
seems like a sensible thing to do.

Whether or not they should be parking where they are is a different, but
relevant, question.

Wasting your time. I've just pulled up alongside a driver parking on
zig-zags on a zebra crossing an hour ago and told him if he parked
there, he'd get 3 penalty points for contravention of the zig-zags. He
just replied that he was just nipping across the road to pick up a
prescription from the...

Had one parking across the back of me at work. Had put hazards on to just
'pop in' to work, then 30 minutes later was still there. It was a hell of a
job trying to get through to his office and find out who the hell it was
who'd just blocked me in.

I had something similar many years ago. In the end I just shoved their
car backwards with my own and drove off. Never heard anything more
about it so I guess either no one was looking or no one cared. Got a
crack in the bumper from it but it was such an old car I didn't give
toss.

In the absence of any specific restrictions on loading and unloading,
commercial vehicles are quite at liberty to stop in no waiting areas to load
or unload. In many cases, it can be the only way to deliver to shops in
older high streets. The hazard warning lamps are used in the pious hope that
the motorists who fail to notice that the lorry in front of them is stopped,
might see the warning lights and stop before they hit it.

TPTB don't mind shrinking the zigzags down to a metre or so if they want to
put a bus stop there, even though nothing obscures visibility better than a
bus.

There was a similar one on Traffic Cops a little while back. A young woman
and friends had stopped on the zig-zags to get a Chinese takeaway, right
outside the door. When less than 100 metres away there was plenty parking.

That may be the case , but why do they seem to assume that they can
just stop where they are without even trying to pull in a bit, put
their hazard lights on and disappear off? To be honest I don't care if
they have to make deliveries. If there is nowhere to stop outside the
shop or whereever then they should deliver early in the morning or
late at night when theres less traffic, not in the middle of the rush
hour. If that means they have to get out of bed early or work late
tough sh1t.
