Great Railway Journeys of the World

In the spirit of the famous TV series, and its impending release to
DVD, what is the greatest railway journey?

Despite plenty of travel abroad the US, Japan, Europe and Australia my
vote would still have to go to the Heart of Wales line, Shrewsbury -
Swansea via every place in Wales begining with 'Ll....'.

Or maybe that bit of the Cambrian Coast from Dovey Junction to Barmouth
that compares with just about anything in the World - well out of one
side of the train anyway.

And if they ever do another series I vote the RHDR should get a program
all to itself.

That old trainspotter himself, Michael Palin is due back next year as
well.

If we're limiting it to UK, I like the bits where the train hugs the
coast - the approaches to Edinburgh & Penzance come to mind.

Many of us who post in here have already travelled from
Stockport to Stalybridge via Denton more than once!

ok ok, serious answers now. :)

My personal favourites:

1. Dawlish Warren (between Exeter and Plymouth for UMTM readers) at night,
clear sky, full moon over the water. Best enjoyed from FGW's Night Riviera
service.
2. Pickering - Grosmont: stretches of track with absolutely no sign of the
impact of human existence, apart from the line itself. Good traction too!
3. Northumberland coast, Alnmouth-Berwick. Especially when the sun's rising.
4. Any intercity route in Switzerland outside grafitti-clad major cities
such as Zurich.
5. North Wales Coast.
6. West Highland Line in snow or sun.

Glasgow to Mallaig, of course. The only unpleasant part of the trip is
arriving at Mallaig and realising that it's a dump at the edge of nowhere.

Keep on going. Take the ferry across to Skye, the bus to Uig, another ferry
to Tarbery (Harris) and the bus on the Golden Road.
