Fears over privacy as police expand surveillance project.

Now if I was a motorist this would worry me but since the motorists
who plague this transport newsgroup don't like any campaigners,
including civil rights, they will just have to put up with it won't
they.

"The police are to expand a car surveillance operation that will allow
them to record and store details of millions of daily journeys for up
to five years, the Guardian has learned.

A national network of roadside cameras will be able to "read" 50m
licence plates a day, enabling officers to reconstruct the journeys of
motorists.

Police have been encouraged to "fully and strategically exploit" the
database, which is already recording the whereabouts of 10 million
drivers a day, during investigations ranging from counter-terrorism to
low-level crime.

But it has raised concerns from civil rights campaigners, who question
whether the details should be kept for so long, and want clearer
guidance on who might have access to the material..."

Trafficmaster drops some of the characters though (so they say...). And
it's not on all roads.

Hmm, I wonder if the government sponsored scheme will cover the smaller
roads or just use the traffic master gear? It might be possible to get
about 'off the grid' still. Hmm, I can see a market for satnav with an
'avoid monitored road' option lol

Yes, another thread by Doug "I hate the state I do but in this case
I'm making an exception. Like the many, many other exceptions that
would give people the impression that I actually love the state"

What, you mean like the fact that he lives in a house owned by state
and relies entirely upon the state for his income? I really don't see
why that would give anyone the impression that Duhg actually loves the
state ...

Since you claim to be interested in civil liberties, why doesn't it
worry you? Indeed, why doesn't the Oyster card worry you? That has been
tracking the movement of more individuals than the proposal to track
vehicles using ANPR is likely to cover.
