Thank you for subsidizing us. After all, that Iron Lady has proved, that
railroads must not be subsidized by the taxpayer, but can be subsidized
by shareholders loosing their money, just as it is done for air traffic.
Again: Thank you for your kindness.

I can't tell you a lot about the ferries, but nonetheless, might be able
to add some interesting facts:
1) Frankfurt to London by rail: 6h30 - 8h30
2) Frankfurt to Milano by rail: 7h30 - 8h30
3) Flights Germany - Italy: 4 000 000 /year
4) Rail journeys Germany - Italy: 300 000 /year

Could the difference between the two be in part because there is (I
think) a direct service to Milano but not to London?
The other part might be the UK's island mentality, though, in that if
you think about "going abroad" most people will still think air or
ferry.

It isn't out of the question that one might be required to show one to
go to Scotland if it gains its independence and joins Schengenland,
though the SNP suggest that that wouldn't be a good idea.
On the subject of "going abroad", though, I still know people who have
never been outside the UK - one of them in his twenties - and it isn't
for want of the price of a tuppeny Ryanair flight.

Nope, money has nothing to do with it. It's down to them perceiving a "need"
to go somewhere.

I guess that about half of the Italy traffic will be generated by two
trains:
+-----------------------------------+-----------+-----------+----------+
| Station | Arrival | Departure | Train |
+-----------------------------------+-----------+--...

Of course if you were flying to Wales from another country in the UK,
you might very well need a passport, if you didn't have a photo driving
licence.
