Congestion charges changes scrapped

Date: Jul 8, 2008 01:13

Boris has cancelled plans to introduce a £25 charge for the least efficient
cars , but has also dropped plans to allow low emission cars free entry.

I'm not sure what to make of this. On one hand , this is a *congestion*
charge which doesn't have anything to do with CO2 levels , but on the other
I can see that lots of people who do use the roads who had been encouraged
to buy more efficient cars have actually been stitched up quite badly.

The £25 charge was always totally disproportionate to the "harm" they caused
though

Reports indicate that Boris might scrap the westward extension of the
"congestion" zone and might also limit the hours of operation so that
people can still visit the central area for lunch, shopping or the
theatre without being ripped off.

Longer term, one hopes that when the contracts with the jackals, er...
company that operates the scheme has expired, it will not be renewed and
the whole scheme will be scrapped.

Crapita are being replaced by IBM as of next November - that was all a
signed & sealed deal under Ken, last October.

Hmm, I wonder how much their CEO donated to the Labour party?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't a fair deal, given the amount of scrutiny
it inevitably got at the time, and would certainly get if things didn't
massively improve (which wouldn't have been hard...)

Crapita's fixed-term contract was up, they were shit, another bidder won.

But will still be ripped off by parking charges - which in the congestion
zone are likely to exceed the CC anyway. Have you never parked there? It
costs a fortune. And only an idiot would attempt to find somewhere to park
for the theatre in the daytime anyway.

And give up the income? Don't be silly. *All* politicians want our money
to spend. Boris wants to scrap bendy buses and replace them - long before
they are worn out. Just where do you think the money will come from?

Well, quite. Not to mention how bloody long it takes to get anywhere -
it's far quicker and easier to get public transport.

I totally agree with you on the 'Congestion' part. It should have always
been called a 'Pollution' charge.
