Ben Webster, Transport Correspondent

"Road congestion is now so bad that almost nine out of ten businesses
support the principle of nationwide tolls, according to a survey by the
British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

The BCC said that businesses were at "breaking point" over the
state of Britain's road network and were prepared to contemplate the
radical change in the way in which they paid for access to it.

A total of 85 per cent of the 1,300 businesses surveyed had experienced
increased operating costs as a direct result of deficiencies in
Britain's transport infrastructure, and 78 per cent said that they
had experienced a loss of man hours.

Congestion affected 84 per cent of businesses in their local area. The
average added cost per year to British businesses from congestion was
£18,000. The sheer volume of traffic was cited by 73 per cent of
businesses as the main reason for congestion in their areas..."

Other countries deal with the problem of lack of road space by the
radical policy of... building roads.

Britain has more vehicles per motorway mile than any other country in
Europe, so we need lots more motorways just to catch up. A nice motorway
through Catford, an unloved place that no-one would miss, might relieve
some of the congestion in south-east London.

And who do you buy your electricity from, Doug?

I would say that ten out of ten businesses would support the plan we really
need- a massive programme of road widening, new motorways and trunk roads,
as well as upgrading of all through routes.

In fact, I would say that the only people who would oppose this would be the
eco-loonies, and as they contribute nothing to society, their views really
aren't worth worrying about.

Why not just use the billions of pounds of tax revenue taken from motorists
to fund more road building and upgrades? The investment would employ people
during construction and help solve the congestion problem once built.

By the way, who supplies your electricity?

No, all the people that had to move out of Catford to make room for it
would fill it up.

Even in the country of the 'Car God' they stopped building urban
motorways for that reason.

You can only build new roads that are beneficial where there's
countryside, which unfortunately for the South East would be precisely
where they're not needed.

Maggie tried this don't you remember her great car economy.

The plan had to be dropped because of all the objections from car
owning Tory Shires.

You see everyone wants the freedom to own and use a car but no one
wants to live with the nuisance of everybody else's cars.

That's why we have commuters in the first place. They commute by car so
that they can live in the leafy suberbs well away from things like
err... well cars.
