This is why.
"The Problem
The industrialized nations made a terrible mistake when they turned to
the automobile as an instrument of improved urban mobility. The car
brought with it major unanticipated consequences for urban life and
has become a serious cause of environmental, social, and aesthetic
problems in cities. The urban automobile:
* Kills street life
* Damages the social fabric of communities
* Isolates people
* Fosters suburban sprawl
* Endangers other street users
* Blots the city's beauty
* Disturbs people with its noise
* Causes air pollution
* Slaughters thousands every year
* Exacerbates global warming
* Wastes energy and natural resources
* Impoverishes nations

It just serves, yet again, to flag up his stupidity, and the clueless nature

I think we may be getting confused about his agenda.
Rather than promoting environmentally friendly policies, I suspect his
agenda is simply to be against everything, includung himself.

Big deal. Places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Amsterdam are
already *practically* car free cities. There is nothing revolutionary
about the concept. Making a city 100%% car free is nearly impossible.
There are a small number of uses for which a car or lorry is
mandatory. The only reason that Venice can get away with no cars is
that it has a canal system to transport goods, but the boats are more
polluting than cars! The only way to make a 100%% car-free city
feasible would be to build an underground conveyor belt system that
has a node at every street corner. Far too expensive at present.
