What's the alternative?
Buy a second car car or make two trip.
Either way no drop in polution. probably a huge increase.

Define "need"...
We used to manage quite happily when I was a kid with a 2CV for a family
car. 2 kids, 2 adults and my dad had a liking for long camping trips to
Cornwall from Lancs, often with my gran in the car too - so 5 up. If we
took lots of luggage, we just took the trailer with us.

I think your argument is more accurately put as: "Not every trip you
make by car requires the use of a big car".
And it's correct.
But how many of us can reasonably afford - or store/garage - a large car
(for the journeys that require it) plus a smaller car for other trips?
Plus the cost of extra road tax, an extra insurance policy, etc?
