Indeed, but in the circs, I would have rather taken my chances and stayed on
the plane TBH. There's always a reasonable chance if it's under control.

It's a small, light way of making us feel safer. The effect is purely
psychological ;-) It gives us a sense that we won't drown if we have to
ditch. The facts are usually that planes "ditch" at such speeds that they
are utterly pointless

How much do they weigh? 1/2 kilo each maybe? Hardly seems worth it.
