BBC News - Parasite HGV Drivers

Has everyone forgotten that there is a reason for fuel duty and that
it's not strictly a tax - well certainly not where HGVs are concerned.

You see the f**king roads don't come for free except that is unless
you're an HGV driver because HGV taxation only covers 50%% of HGV
infrastructure costs (DfT's own figures) in other words they're
already subsidised.

If they are given special dispensation from fuel duty has anyone
considered the effect on their competitors the rail, maritime and
aviation freight carriers who receive zero subsidies?

As for most expensive fuel in Europe, well yes, but unlike most of
Europe the UK’s trunk roads are all toll free – another conveniently
forgotten fact.

At 27 million pound per mile motorways cost the f**king earth, and
that's why petrol should also.

So how much more do you want to pay for a loaf of bread?

To put it simply...

The Labour Party had the miners to annoy Thatcher and bring down the
Heath Government and the Tories have the Road Haulage Association. Does
anyone really think the 2000 blockades were a non political bit of
spontaneity ? I've got my suspicions about the hang em and hunt em
brigade at the Countryside alliance too.

Road user contribute over 200 billion in various taxes and duties, but the
govt only spends about a 1/4 of that on the highway system, every other
country in the EU has a better road system than us, with even bigger trucks
yet fuel is still cheaper.
