What is it about excessive mechanised travel that seems to bring out
the worst in people? Is it the speed or the inconvenience or the
risks?

"This year alone has seen the number of incidents which could have
threatened the safety of passengers or crew increase by a third, while
assaults on cabin staff have doubled.

Latest Civil Aviation Authority figures show that in the first three
months of this year there were 601 incidents of 'serious' of
'significant' cases of air rage.

The numbers are a 32 per cent rise on the 458 cases for the same
period last year, and three times the 214 incidents logged in the
first quarter of 2003.

The number of serious incidents of violence against cabin crew has
doubled from nine in the first quarter of 2007 to 18 in 2008.

CAA statistics show males in their 30s are the main offenders,
although 25 per cent of incidents involve women..."

I think that pandering to a natural instinct to move around, probably
the remnants of the hunter gatherer instinct and now vastly amplified
by mechanised travel, is highly destructive in a modern world and so
stressful it drives people to acts of violence.
