A Tribute to the Tanker Drivers

I just wanted to put on record my congratulations to our heroic Brothers,
the Shell tanker drivers, following the most effective industrial action
this country has seen for a generation.

The drivers wanted 7%% but in a brilliant display of negotiating skill, Shell
settled for 14%%.

Governments might be prepared to take on the miners or the firemen for a
lengthy period, but four days of a partial, part-time truck drivers strike
was enough to make Mr Brown wake up and smell the coffee, make a few phone
calls and knock a few heads together.

So now the rest of us truckers are looking at this settlement with our beady
little rat-like eyes and thinking "Hmmmm. We'll have some of that".

I think you'll be hearing more from us this year.

They aren't employed by Shell...

Just give us all a bit of a nod and a wink to fill up first, eh? ;-)

Very true, but they work for Shell and undoubtedly it was Shell holding the
purse strings.

How could they do that, Ger-ge-ger-ger Granville?

In a Supply & Demand economy, it's us that are in demand.

Hope they enjoy the short to medium term pay rise.

Do you really think any large company would cave in so quickly if they
didn't have longer term plans to claw this back in other ways?

Both Shell and Hoyer will be planning ways in which they can get their
revenge and cut their costs.

Unions bullying employers rarely win on a long term basis - especially
when the workforce are largely unskilled and relatively easily replaced.

Enjoy it whilst it lasts.

There are many people out there now who have seen the £42k headlines and
will be considering a career change.

The wider-ranging effects could well be that a foreign owned company
with foreign drivers realises they can undercut Hoyer with lower, but
still well-paid drivers....

It would have been easier to have said "I am stupid".

I couldn't do it. There are mountains of paperwork to begin with, and I
couldn't (or wouldn't) do that.

The thing is that petrol tanker drivers need to be a cut above the
Yorkie-eating, wank-mag reading greasy spoon eater such as myself, and they
were understandably pissed off that they were earning no more than I do.

They won because they threatened to do the same again this weekend. So the
Government caved in (The Government will have told Shell to cough up the
money or else)

Did you get a pay rise this year Granville? Is this just sour grapes?
