"The British government has incorporated many of Carfree UK's ideas
into the recently published guidelines for authorities and
developers. These relate to the planned building of ten new 'eco-
towns', each accommodating 5000-20000 people. The Government's
planning department (CLG) co-produced the following Transport
Worksheet:
http://www.tcpa.org.uk/ecotowns/20080325_ET_WS_Transport.pdf
"Car-free residential and mixed-use ‘ped-shed’ areas should cover
a substantial proportion of the eco-town."
and the Department for Transport released this shortly afterwards,
complete with our logo:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/sustainable/sustainabletransnew.pdf
"How to promote a reduction in car dependency...
Create a completely, or partially, car-free site (possibly using car-
free demonstration areas). This might involve restricting car parking
to residents with disabilities, visitors and car clubs."
A real victory for the carfree movement here in Britain!

Can you confirm that'll you'll be setting an example of your preachings, and
moving to one of the "eco-towns" as soon as possible ?

No, my prayer is that my neighbours will be abandoning their urban
4x4s and will be moving to those so-called eco-towns instead, as this
will provide the maximum benefit. My moving would have little impact
due to the measures I take already.

But it's not, is it Duhng?
Have you looked at where those eco-towns are to be built? Bordon for
example, inaccesible by anything other than car. The "eco-town" idea is
simply a way for the government to by-pass planning restrictions so that
it can sell off ex-MoD land that should be returned to the community as
Greenham Common was (at least in the case of Bordon, that's the idea).
So they've suckered you and the other eco-weenies into accepting an
invasion of the countryside simply by adding the tag "eco" onto their
unacceptable plans.
