They would be a lot less affluent if they didn't use motor vehicles.
One of the most interesting things that we regular visitors notice
about the Netherlands is that they have a much more thoroughgoing
highway network than we have. Basically, you can get from anywhere to
more or less anywhere else without going through a town. And that
means that the urban landscape can be made more pedestrian-friendly.
Of course, we could have the same here if only there wasn't this
prejudice against giving us the proper European-style motorway network
that we deserve and pay for. The Dutch (as small as The Netherlands
are) have about twice the mileage of motorway as compared with the UK.
There is no Dutch town of any size that is not connected to the
network. Compare and contrast.
