32 SUVs disabled across Oxford.

Rough justice? A very small amount of harm to discourage a much bigger
amount?

" Up to 32 SUV owners awoke this morning to discover that their
destructive vehicles had been disabled.

Using the 'mung bean trick', whereby a mung bean is inserted into the
valve of a tyre before the cap is screwed back on, tyres were let down
in Marston, Headington, and the highly affluent area of Summertown.
Messages were left under windscreen wipers warning the owners not to
attempt to drive their 4x4s, and explaining why it was felt that
direct action had to be taken to resist their assault on this planet.
They were informed that more than a quarter of the UK's CO2 generation
is attributable to the transport sector, and that many Sports Utility
Vehicles emit up to 300%% more greenhouse gases than the average car.
They were also told that driving a car is not a 'right', and that
driving an SUV is an unacceptably selfish act in the face of what may
become unstoppable climate change.

This is a simple action that anyone can do, anytime or place..."

What do you think about it, Doug? do you think that it was helpful? do
you think that lentil-eating cyclists like me will feel safer with 32
peeved SUV drivers around?

If somebody is so utterly inept as a driver to not be able to tell
instantly the vehicle starts to move that it's got four completely flat
tyres, they really shouldn't be on the road...

Very true, I was thinking if it was just one tyre down (hence saying "a"
flat). I would think on the Xant it would be easy not to notice if a rear
was flat when setting off.
I had a rear one blow at "high motorway speeds" on the last year, I didn't
even notice until I smelt the burning and heard a funny whirring noise. OTOH
it'd be bloody impossible *not* to notice on the Cherokee..

No. The sidewalls will almost certainly have sustained damage from having
the full weight of the car sat on them via two small points of contact
from the rims. Where you've got a heavy, high-performance vehicle, you
really don't fuck about with the tyres - a blow-out at speed is not going
to be pleasant at all, and could easily be fatal. Not just, of course,
for the occupants.

In addition, of course, they may not simply pump up. If the foreign
object inserted into the valve has damaged the core, it will probably
need to be replaced, perhaps the whole valve stem - which requires the
tyre to be removed from the rim.
