Text driver jailed for bike death.

Author: Doug
Date: Feb 29, 2008 09:32

Motorist killer gets same sentence as Animal Rights Activist who
physically harmed no one.

"A motorist who was texting on her mobile phone when she hit and
killed a cyclist has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Jordan Wickington, 19, died from head injuries when he went through a
red light and was struck by Kiera Coultas' car in Southampton in
February 2007.

The 25-year-old from Hythe, Hampshire, was driving at 45mph in a 30mph
zone.

Miss Coultas had earlier been found guilty at Southampton Crown Court
of causing death by dangerous driving.

Seeing my 19-year-old brother lying dying in a hospital bed was too
much to take
Laura Wickington

Judge Jeremy Burford also banned her from driving..."

For only five years?

Parking fines via CCTV to force drivers to obey.

Author: Doug
Date: Feb 28, 2008 21:54

The deterrents just keep piling up don't they. Just think of all those
'sinking hearts' everywhere.

"The sight of a parking attendant sticking a ticket on your windscreen
makes the heart sink. But from the end of next month even a ticketless
car will not mean you have escaped.

Under an overhaul of parking regulations set out by the Government, a
new era of “remote enforcement” will become commonplace. From March 31
councils across England will be allowed to use CCTV cameras to detect
parking offences.

Drivers will not know that they have been caught until a letter
arrives up to 14 days later, by which time they may be unable to
gather evidence to defend themselves..."

New removal vehicles to ease city congestion.

Author: Doug
Date: Feb 28, 2008 02:56

This should improve things a bit. Particularly cycle lanes.

"Hi-tech removal vehicles are to be introduced along some of London's
busiest roads in the latest move to reduce congestion in the capital.

Transport for London's latest scheme will see 21 trucks operate along
the city's red route network , which its figures show carry around a
third of the capital's traffic.

The new trucks are fitted with satellite navigation and automatic
number plate recognition software. Parking attendants will be able to
call on the trucks to remove vehicles parked illegally or blocking the
road..."

For the massive disruption to the rail network caused by there Christmas
repairs over running, Network rail say as a result it may not finish the
west coast mainline by December as they are running 2 weeks behind schedule.
So we should expect more delays and cancelled trains over the summer with an
additional 13 weekends of line closures. If you would like to go anywhere on
the west coast over Easter, or on a weekend then trains are out of the
question again.

  URGENT - EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Author: Brimstone
Date: Feb 27, 2008 12:03

I hope you'll forgive this being off topic, but given the nature of the
situation I'm sure you'll understand and be only too willing to help.

***********URGENT - EARTHQUAKE APPEAL***************

At 00:54 on Wednesday 27rd February an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the
Richter scale hit Doncaster, South Yorkshire, causing untold disruption and
distress.

Many were woken well before their giro arrived. Several riceless collections
of mementoes from the Balearics and Spanish Costas were damaged. Three areas
of historic and scientifically significant litter were disturbed. Thousands
are confused and bewildered, trying to come to terms with the fact that
something
interesting has happened in Doncaster.

One resident, Donna-Marie Dutton, a 17-year-old mother-of-three said: 'It
was such a shock, little Chantal-Leanne came running into my bedroom crying.
My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it. My punter
got dressed and left. I was still shaking when I was watching Trisha the
next
morning.'

  Peak Oil ( again)

Author: Fod
Date: Feb 27, 2008 07:15

Another article on peak oil.

http://timesonline.typepad.com/environment/2008/02/peak-oil-denial.html

Given how much misinformation is kicking about I'm guessing it would
be impossible to predict the peak until well after its happened.

Given the price rises in oil its also likely that alternatives to it
are going to be developed at a much faster rate over the next couple
of decades.

The only thing that I took form the article was the complete lack of
forward planning the government seems to have for when the oil does
get close to running out. The downside to 5 year stints where
worrying about headlines take priority over something that might be
15-150 years away?

Aviation climate protesters in the UK facing even bigger uphill struggle to combat GW

Author: Fod
Date: Feb 27, 2008 03:07

The problem with GW is that its global. Even if protesters get
successes in the Uk its looking like Chinas going to take one large
dump over any progress they makes with beasts such as

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7265557.stm

Perhaps we need a new pressure group to pressure the government into
cutting deals with the developing 3rd world to do more.

it would be a bit like doug ( a man with a history of pollution)
changing track and trying to encourage others to do different from
what he himself once did. Perhaps Doug would be a suitable figurehead
for such a movement?

I know he'd never travel to china but we could use his videophone to
send images of the great man to inspire China into polluting less...

OT: Are we now about to go back to having global colling and another ice age?

Author: Fod
Date: Feb 27, 2008 02:34

This does have some transport relevance but seeing as its not direct
I've flagged the thread as being off topic so people can avoid it if
they choose.

Anyways... Now we seem to be having global cooling. I can't keep up.
Still its just a year so it might be a blip.

http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Monitors+Report+Worldwide+Global+Cooling/article10866...

I'm neither for nor against GW btw; I just don't have time to look at
the evidence in enough detail. I dislike the way its turned into a
religion that can't be questioned but thats another issue.
