I found out today that the whole of Orchard Place north of the Lower Lea
Crossing has been demolished. It's a shame.... although ugly by day, the
sight from the DLR at night was one of the most imposing in London. I never
got to see what it all looked like from the road itself, and now never will.
I imagine they're putting some more boring yuppie flats there, but I can't
find anything on the web about it.
At the southern end of Orchard Place I found Trinity Buoy, London's only
lighthouse!

It is. It made me very happy to see working riverside like that soldiering
on.

Probably will be flats. It's a good place for it. Isn't this part of the
Thames Gateway plan?
I wonder if they'll put in a footbridge from Canning Town station across
to whatever it is they build. God, ten years from now, that's going to be
wall-to-wall waterfront cafes and bistros on pontoons, isn't it? On the
Lea [1]. The fucking Lea!
I foresee ten centuries of vengeful spirits rising from the riverbed, from
Bow Locks to Enfield, and charging downriver to wash away every last trace
of the yuppification. Like in that bit in the Lord of the Rings that's
copied off that Guinness advert with the Leftfield music.

I can tell you more, though I'm afraid I'm missing some crucial
details. It was the Pura Foods factory, and it was destroyed by a fire
in 2006 (IIRC)- however it was apparently out of use already by that
time. The site was occupied by Pura Foods since the early 90's [1],
who have now moved out to Purfleet in Essex - and apparently used to
be known as the Pure Lard Company! [2]

I wish to retract part of that comment before everyone laughs at me!
It is of course not a bridge on any such Poplar to Royal Docks railway
line, because no such line existed.

The next loop of the Lea must have moved since it was built... even a DLR
train couldn't get around that corner.

With any luck (Olympic funding and all that) it might even be a cycle
bridge!
