I've always been sceptical about these neighbourhood signs put up by
councils, but yesterday I found one of the dumbest ones... as you pass from
New Cross Road to Old Kent Rd you enter LB Southwark and are greeted by a
sign that says "Southwark: Welcome to Peckham Rye & Nunhead". I'd say if you
want either of those places, you have taken a wrong turning.

The signs I love are the ones that try and persuade you you're in a
village. "Welcome to Southgate Village" or whatever. As if some tacky
sign is going to make you see green fields and a rustic leaning on his
pitchfork with maybe some fluffy gamboling sheep running around ,
instead of some traffic snarled , polluted suburb. Who do they think
they're kidding?

I have "Welcome to Newham" sign next to block of flat where I live.
IMHO it should be changed to "BEWARE! NEWHAM!"...
