It is proprietary.

It will route calls through your domain.

It is expensive to call out.

It is tied to a PC (this will be resolved, but messily).

They are ****s about number portability.

They get free calls if they do?

  Shoretel + home workers

Author: Timothy Teapot

A quick stab in the dark here. Putting the silly licence to one side, it
is possible to have a remote home worker with a vanilla IP phone or ATA
(who is on a static IP address with their ISP) be put as part of a pickup
group on a shoretel system?

Idea is this; it's Christmas, the support guys are at home. They have
Linksys IP phones or ATA's and static IP's. Rather than drag them into
the office, is it easy to add an external IP phone to the support group?

Probably one for the resident genius (go on Gordon!)

I've often heard about how Skype will start using up your bandwidth.

I monitor my traffic, and have to say that in three years Skype has never
been a problem in this respect.

Am I just lucky?

I suggest you use a static address rather than allowing
your router to assign one via DHCP.

OK, could you suggest what is the disadvantage of DHCP.
It seems to work OK.
Is it worth me changing ?

Thanks.

Yes Ivor, you should be more patriotic and promote the VoIP service supplied
by a large tax-dodging UK supermarket. I mean, they only get one in every
eight pounds spent in this country so I think we should find it in our
hearts to be a little more charitable towards them this Christmas, don't
you?

Au contraire. Only bloody fools are incapable of programming their kit to
work with Sipgate. I can program your kit to work with Sipgate for you, but
it's going to cost you about a fiver. And I'd want the fiver up front too;
your reputation preceeds you, Ronny Baby!

  BT Hub phone alternative

Author:
Date: Sep 23, 2008 01:17

Hello,

I have been directed to this newsgroup to ask for advice. I do not use the
BT Home Hub, as I've heard too many poor reports about it. I'd like to use
the Voip phonecalls they offer though. Could any of you recommend a phone
that will plug in to my ethernet port on the back of my DG834GT Netgear
router? A handset that can do both landline and BT voip would be great,
along with any configuration advice, I don't need to change my router, as it
is suffient for the speed of internet that I receive already. Thanks very
much! I haven't the first clue about Voip, beyond using the verizon service
that used to be offered with msn, and that was a year or more ago.

  VoIP help needed please

One of my wife's work colleagues recently retired to Spain. Just looked
at our last 2 months phone charges and decided £20/month on calls to
Spain is a bit OTT, and perhaps now would be a good time to go VoIP, so
before I do I hope someone here can help out with a few questions.

I understand the basics of VoIP, but my first question is about phones
and connections. I don't want a USB connected phone, but would rather
connect it directly to my LAN. Seen a number of phones on eBay (after
excluding the majority of the USB connected ones) from the likes of
Avaya and Cisco. In general, will these work on a plain network
connection or would they be likely to need some sort of PBX/Comms
software on the server?

In terms of making calls, I assume that the charges are the cost of
transferring the call from the internet to the PSTN. If the callee is
also an IP phone, does the call still get charged? Does it depend on
who the VoIP supplier is?

Thanks, think that's it for the moment.
