  Rules of Golf Quiz

Author: Brian Yare
Date: Oct 11, 2006 23:42

Hi, all. I've been off the group for many months but thought I'd better call
by.

The Quiz has started, and I am sorry to report that neither of Ravenmeadow's
teams progressed to the second round this year.

The men's team lost badly away to Summerhill. We didn't get a single
3-pointer right.

The ladies' team (which included 2 males) lost by a single point to
Worcester Golf and Country Club.

I was surprised that

1) the questions for both these matches (played on the same day but in
different locations) were apparently the same. I played no. 3 in the B set
of questions in one team and my son, Alex, played in the same position in
the other team. Of course he got all his individual questions right. :-(

2) When a club has more than one team in the quiz, they appear to be drawn
so that they meet in the 2nd round. I've only checked the Midland region,
but this happens 3 times. This seems somewhat biassed, and a better solution
would be to keep the 2 teams apart up to the county final stage, but who am
I to criticise.

3) The questions seemed much, much harder this year.

I meant what I said.

More active than working in the Pro Shop, marshalling, starting, helping
organise tournaments, visits to and from other clubs and helping the vets?

Research before you venture opinions founded on prejudice.

  Golf holidays c/w tuition

Author: John H
Date: Oct 11, 2006 12:59

My wife has taken up golf about 18 months ago and is really into it. She
does get very frustrated with her lack of progress but don't we all.

She has a 36 handicap but realistically needs 45. I play off 15
(alledgedly). She really fancies a golfing holiday but I have a few
reservations.

1) She is not confident playing with others, unless they are at her level
2) She 'gives up' after a bad hole and I am worried it will spoil a days
golf.
3) Whilst I enjoy playing with her as well as playing new courses, I do
get a bit fed up sometimes.

Any ideas for a holiday?

1)I have considered playing a few courses in Southern Scotland (Borders)
or Northumberland but a bit put of by the weather
2) A cruise and play golf as well. Expensive and potentially everyone
will be a good golfer
3)Some form of tuition and play as well option.

Any thoughts or experiences that may help

John

I'm with you here John. The old guard like it just the way it has always
been. Progress? Hummpphhh. And with the ever increasing average age of golf
clubs, the guard gets stronger each year!

Two comments:

1) Unless you means-test everyone and then set their sub accordingly,
there will always be anomalies.

2) If your committee can change the subs structure as you describe
without the approval of the members, then your club needs a more
robust constitution. That certainly wouldn't have been possible at the
last members' club that I belonged to.
