OT: Baffling sound problem

Guys

I've lost all sound in Windows. Funny thing is though, it's ok in games,
MediaCenter, etc. My little speaker icon is gone from the system tray, even
though the box is ticked if I go to Control Panel > Sounds > "Place speaker
icon in system tray". If I untick it, click Apply, then re-tick, Apply,
nothing happens.

While in this bit of Control Panel I can adjust the volume using the mixer,
etc (but only if I have, say, MediaCenter, open so I can hear the
difference - the usual little "ding" you get when adjusting the slider isn't
playing).

Only change recently has been an uninstall of some adidtional codecs that
came with my (downloaded) copy of Nero, which then caused me to get "codec
missing" errors when trying to play videos and mp3's in MediaCenter. So I
uninstalled also my K-Lite codec pack, and re-installed it. The
music/videos, etc started working again in MediaCenter, but then a few days
later this problem started happening.
