Of course, Southampton are not in the Premiership - they are about
halfway up the Championship right now, but I suppose the same argument
would extend to (say) Portsmouth. But having said that, Newcastle and
Sunderland take a fair travelling support with them too, and that's
still a daunting journey.

That's much the case with Rangers anyway. :-)

Southampton!!!!
Those cheating third-rate crap. I wouldn't travel from Pompey to see 'the
scummers' unless it was to watch Pompey thrash them again.
For one thing they havn't been in the Prem for two years and are currently
struggling in the bottom of the fizzy pop league.
Good!
Best place for them is the Conference at best.
However, I can see plenty of Celtic fans travelling to Portsmouth for the
privilige of watching the most talented and exciting teams in English
football and a team destined for European greatness - following the forgone
coclusion of their walking away with the double this season of course

You are one of many who would get a real shock if the old firm had access to
the kind of TV money available in England

I think that with access to TV money and guaranteed full houses, the old firm
could compete BUT also look at the down side. They would not be guaranteed
entry into europe every year and there is the possibility of relegation if
things go really badly for them for any particular reason. Unsound transfers,
injuries etc etc can cause this even to big clubs.
Also would they lose support if they became mid table mediocrity for a season
or two.
I wonder what would happen to Scottish football if they did go. Presumably
a small number of clubs would get access to european money and take over ?
The west coast would also need a big team. Who might profit from that ?
